How the calculator counts

The day count is the number of midnights between the two dates: from today to tomorrow is 1 day. That is the usual way to answer "how many days until" a date, and it matches the countdowns across CountDay. If you are counting days of something — a 5-day festival from Friday to Tuesday, or nights versus days of a trip — tick Include both start and end date to add one.

Business days are Monday through Friday. Public holidays are not removed, because they differ by country, state, and employer. Leap years are handled automatically: the calculator uses real calendar dates, so February 29 is counted only in leap years.

The "years, months and days" breakdown counts whole calendar months first. Adding one month to January 31 lands on the last day of February, the same rule most spreadsheets use.

For the reasoning behind these rules — and worked examples you can check by hand — read how to count the days between two dates. To keep watching a date, save it as a countdown or browse countdowns for every day of the year.

Frequently asked questions

Does the date calculator include the end date?

By default it counts the days between the two dates, excluding the start date and including the end date, the same way you would say there is 1 day between today and tomorrow. Tick "Include both start and end date" to add one day, which is useful for counting days of a trip or an event.

How are business days counted?

Business days are Monday through Friday. The calculator does not subtract public holidays, because they vary by country and employer.

Does the calculator handle leap years?

Yes. It works with real calendar dates, so February 29 is counted in leap years such as 2028 and skipped in common years.
